The Concerto for marimba and orchestra was composed and commissioned by the National Institute of Concerts for the swedish marimba virtuoso, Daniel Berg. He premiered the concerto on May 30th 2000, together with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Michael Bartosch, conductor. The concert was recorded and broadcasted by the Swedish Radio.
The Concerto is in three movements, played attacca, with a duration of 19 min. In this concerto I have tried to shape something from the instruments soul, its historical background, by mixing elements of latin american rythms, spanish melodical fragments; being an instrument with roots from the african amadinda which was brought to Latin America by the spanish slave ships.
